Cable maintenance may affect net speeds Oct 24-26

DHAKA: State Minister for Post and Telecommunication Tarana Halim said internet users might experience slower speeds from Oct 24-26 due to maintenance work of the first submarine cable (SEA-ME-WE 4).

She made the remark to reporters at a program in secretariat on Sunday (Oct 22).

However, since Bangladesh is now connected with a second submarine cable (SEA-ME-WE 4), internet services will be provided in alternative way, she said.

Tarana said, “Connection with the first cable will be temporarily cut for the first time in 12 years due to some maintenance work. In the meantime, we will receive internet service from the second cable but the speeds might drop a bit.”

Bangladesh was first connected with the submarine cable in 2005 with a bandwidth of 250 Gbps. Moreover, Bangladesh is also connected with six others alternative submarine cable or ITCs (Internation Terrestrial Cable).

Earlier on September 10, the landing station of the second submarine cable with an internet speed of 1500gbps was launched in Patuakhali. Internet demand in the country is more than 400 gbps.
