Poverty rate decreases to 24.3pc in 6-yr in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Due to continuous economic growth, the percentage of poverty in Bangladesh has come down to 24.3 from 31.5 in six-year period, says a survey report.

Bangladesh Statistical Department made the disclosure in a report called Household Income and Expenditure Survey-2016 in city’s Agargaon area on Tuesday afternoon (Oct 17).

According to the report, the extreme poverty rate in Bangladesh is currently 12.9 per cent which was 17.6 per cent six years ago. Poverty rate in village areas is 26.4 per cent and 18.9 per cent in city areas.

The survey was conducted on 46,080 families in 2,000 selected places in Bangladesh. 

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and representatives of the World Bank were present at the report publishing ceremony.
