DHAKA: Egg sale on the World Egg Day turned into a complete disaster after police tried to contain disarrayed crowd in Krishibid Institute in Dhaka on Friday noon (Oct 13).

The egg sale started around 9:00am with the goal to give eggs to people in a cheap rate. Around 20,000 eggs were supposed to be sold with Tk 3 per piece.

However, more than 50,000 people showed up and stood in line for eggs that soon turned into chaos as the stock fell shorter than demand. Police started to charge baton as the situation got out of hand.

The authority had to close down egg sale around 11:15am.

Normally an egg is sold at Tk 8-9 in Dhaka. But a large number of people gathered in the Krishibid institute after hearing the news that per piece egg is being sold here at only Tk 3.

The gathering was so huge that crowds reached the roads crossing institution’s boundary. At one point, people, failing to get eggs, started to hurl bricks towards the sellers. As a result a lot of eggs were wasted.
