Man to die for killing wife in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: A district court on Monday (Sep 25) sentenced death penalty to man for hacking his wife to death over dowry demand in Rajshahi.

Judge of Rajshahi Women and Children Repression court-2 Mansur Alam also fined the convict Tk 25,000 and acquitted two other accused in the case as the prosecution was failed to produce enough evidence against them.

The death row convict is Rafiqul Islam, son of one Ohiruddin of Jamni village in Puthia upazila. The two others acquitted persons are Rafiqul’s mother Bilatuneesa and elder brother Mafizul Islam.

According to case statements, on May 16 in 2007, the convict hacked his wife Rina Khatun to death over dowry demand. Later victim’s brother Yasin Ali filed a murder case with Puthia police station accusing the trio. 

The convict was present at court while the verdict was delivered and taken to Rajshahi central jail.
