Muslim countries should be united to end Rohingya crisis: Hasina

NEW YORK, USA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged all the member countries of Organizations of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to be united, vowing to put an end to the growing Rohingya crisis.

Sheikh Hasina made the call while addressing a meeting of OIC Communication Group, in sideline of 72nd session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in UN Headquarters at around 03:30 local time Tuesday (September 19).

OIC Secretary General Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen and UN Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock were among others spoke the meeting. 

Pointing out that ‘ethnic cleansing’ continues in Myanmar, Sheikh Hasina said, “Our Muslim kinsmen are facing ethnic cleansing. Myanmar’s armed forces are wreaking havoc in Rakhine state.” 

“The OIC-covered countries should be united before it is much delay, to solve the Rohingya crisis. Bangladesh will always support the steps and plans initiated by OIC regarding this.”

“All sorts of barbarism carried out on the Rohingya Muslims should be stopped immediately. The forcefully displaced Muslims should be taken aback to their homeland with due safety and honor.”     

She proposed to implement the recommendation of Kofi Anan Commission soon and establish ‘safe zone’ inside Myanmar to protect the innocent civilians especially women, children and the elders. 

“We want to see the end of ethnic cleansing. The crisis originated in Myanmar and therefore, they should find out the solution too”, said Sheikh Hasina.
