Saudi’s largest aid consignment for Rohingyas to arrive Friday

DHAKA: The largest consignment of humanitarian assistance from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) for Rohingya refugees, who entered Bangladesh fleeing persecution in Myanmar, will arrive in Chittagong on Friday (September 22).

Yeasin Md Abdus Shahid Chowdhury, secretary of Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Dhaka, on Tuesday (September 19) said that a consignment of around 100 tonnes of aid materials is coming from Saudi Arabia.

“It is the largest consignment of aids in terms of quantity of goods since the Rohingya influx began on August 25,” he said.

The secretary added that Saudi will continue its efforts to find a lasting solution to the plight of the Rohingya Muslims.

According to the information, a special aircraft carrying the aid materials will land at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong at 2.30 am on Friday.

Charge de Affairs of the embassy Amer Omar Salem Omar, and In-charge of the religious affairs section Saad Awad Alqahtani will hand over the relief materials to representative of the Bangladesh government in the presence of officials of the IOM Bangladesh.

A five-member delegation led by Fahad Ayed S Al Osemy, head of the Saudi KSrelief will also attend the occasion.

The aid consignment includes different food items like flour, rice, sugar, white beans, vaba beans, salt, dates and oil, and blanket, mats, and tents.

About 410,000 Rohingya refugees entered Bangladesh, escaping the ethnic cleansing conducted by Myanmar army and Buddhists in the country's Rakhine State began on August 25.

At least 1000 people have been killed in the operation of the Mynamar army.

About a million Rohingya lived in Rakhine State until the recent violence. Most face travel restrictions and are denied citizenship in Myanmar.
