RANGPUR: A district court has sentenced death penalty to a man for hacking his two wives to death in Rangpur. 

Rangpur District and Sessions Judge Humsayun Kabir passed the order on Tuesday (Aug 22).

The death row convict is Ilias Ali, son of one Amzad Hossain, hailing from Rupshi village in Mithapur upazila of Rangpur.

State prosecutor Abdul Malek said, on July 18 in 2014, the convict hacked his second wife Maksuda Begum to death while she was sleeping in bed. Amzad then attacked his first wife Momena Begum as she had witnessed the murder accidentally and tried to flee in horror. 

Following the incident, villagers captured Amzad and handed him over to police. Both the dead bodies were recovered to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Later Mithapur police station sub-inspector (SI) Nazrul Islam, as plaintiff, filed a murder case.
