Review plea on 16th amendment verdict soon: Law minister

DHAKA: Law minister Anisul Huq said that a review petition will be filed against the Supreme Court verdict which scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution.

The minister made the remark to reporters while attending a function in city’s Tejgaon area on Friday (Aug 18).

He said filing for a review is taking time as the full verdict is being thoroughly read and scrutinized.

On the issue of government’s criticism against the verdict, Anisul said, “We are not criticizing the verdict. But there are some irrelevant observations in the verdict which should be addressed. An application for the release of full verdict’s certified copy has been submitted. The government is preparing for a review.”

However, Anisul Huq reiterated that the government has full respect on the verdict despite having a difference of opinion.

On July 3, a seven-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, delivered the verdict, upholding the HC’s decision that declared the 16th amendment to the Constitution illegal.

With that, the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) has finally lost the power of removing Supreme Court judges following the verdict of the apex court.

The “Constitution (16th Amendment) Bill-2014” was passed in the Parliament on September 17 in 2014. The amendment abolished the Chief Justice-led Supreme Judicial Council system which was introduced in 1978.
