AL leader suspended over UNO case

BARISAL: Awami League has temporarily suspended it's Barisal district unit leader Obaidullah Saju who filed a defamation lawsuit against a Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tariq Salman for publishing a “distorted” photo of Bangabandhu in an invitation card.

The decision came from a nomination board meeting chaired by AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh on Friday (July 21).

After the meeting, AL general secretary told reporters that, Obaidullah Saju, religious affairs secretary of Barisal District Awami League and president of Barisal Lawyers' Association, has been suspended according to the section 47(a) of the party constitution.

Besides, a show-cause notice was sent to him to explain why he should not be expelled from the party.

Tariq Salman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Barguna Sadar and a former UNO of Barisal’s Agoiljhara upazila, was sued after he printed the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, painted by a child, on an invitation card.

This incident drew wide spread criticism on social media.
