Student-cop clash in Shahbagh: 3 hurt, 8 held

DHAKA: At least three students were injured as a clash between the police and the students took place at Shahbagh in the city on Thursday morning (July 20).

Two of the injured students were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). They are Siddiqur Rahman of Govt. Titumir College and Mainul Hasan of Dhaka College.

Police also arrested eight students from the spot during the clash.

The students of seven government colleges of Dhaka city, which were affiliated to the Dhaka University in February last, gathered in Shahbagh to join sit-in program demanding reducing of session jam, immediate taking of annual examinations and publishing routine.

Police surrounded the students from all sides so that they could not create any kind of chaos.

But, at one stage, police threw rubber bullets and tear shells when students tried to get out of their surroundings.  As a result, the three college students received injuries.

Students said that they would not leave the street until their demands are met.

The seven colleges which are now affiliated to the Dhaka University are- Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls' College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College.
