JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY: Four students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged a hunger strike unto death on campus demanding withdrawal of a case filed against 54 students over allegedly vandalizing the Vice Chancellor’s residence.

Tahmina Jahan of 42nd batch of Department of English sat in the hunger strike Saturday night (July 15) at the Shaheed Minar premise of the university.

Later, Muntasir Arman of 43rd batch of Department of Law and Justice joined the strike.

Earlier, on Saturday evening, Sarder Jahidur Rahman of 42nd batch of English department and Puja Biswas of 40th batch of Department of International Relations sat in the hunger strike at the Shaheed Minar premise.

Some teachers and students of the university expressed solidarity with them.

JU Proctor Professor Tapan Kumar Saha said that the proctorial body worked for ensuring security for the protesting students.

The four students said that they will continue the hunger strike until the Vice Chancellor gives assurance for withdrawing the case.

Contacted, JU VC Professor Farzana Islam said that their sudden decision shocked me. Rather than staging a hunger strike, they along with their teachers could have sit in a discussion with us, she said.

Regarding withdrawing the cases, she said, “Police, as plaintiff, filed the case. We can’t cancel the case as there is a legal process. But, we can pursue the authority to cancel the case quickly.”

Earlier on May 27, some students of the varsity carried out vandalism at the residence of the VC, being enraged over police attack in a demonstration protesting deaths of two students in a road accident near the campus.

Later, JU authority filed a case against 54 students over the incident.
