GAIBANDHA: At least 17 people were killed as a truck overturned at Pirganj area of Dhaka-Rangpur Highway on early Saturday (June 24).
Pirganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Karim told Banglanews that some 40-45 people boarded on a truck to reach their village homes in different areas of North Bengal, for celebrating eid with the families there.
After losing control, the truck overturned at Kalabagan area of Pirganj in the highway at around 6am, leaving 11 dead on the spot and injured 20 others.
Of the injured, six people died later while en route to Pirganj Upazila Health complex for treatment.
However, eight of the injured were shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) as their condition was deteriorating.
The deceased were mostly from Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat and garment workers in profession.
Fire service workers and police are working on the accident site, added the OC.
