DHAKA: A countrywide agitation programs in the educational institutes has been called on Saturday (May 27) to protest the removal of Lady Justice’s statue from Supreme Court premise.
Samajtantrik Chhatra Front secretary general Nasir Uddin Prince announced the demonstration programs, immediately after a rally was foiled by police near Supreme Court, at around 12:15 pm Friday (May 26).
Prince said, “Police obstructed our peaceful rally. They have used bullets, tear shells and water cannons upon us.”
However, police detained four protesters from the rally.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna zone deputy commissioner (DC) Maruf Hossain Sarder said that they have dispersed the protesters as they were staging rally in the Supreme Court premise, denying request from police.
However, leaders and activists of some progressive bodies were demonstrating agitation since 11:00 am Friday, over the statue removal from the court premises early Friday.
Earlier, the sculpture of Lady Justice was removed from the Supreme Court premises at around 4:00 am, in presence of law enforcers and Mrinal Haque, sculptor of the statue.
Since installation of the sculpture in 2016, some Islamic bodies of the country including Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh demanded removal of it.
