NARAYANGANJ: A district court on Thursday (May 25) granted bail to Rafiur Rabbi, a cultural personality and father of the slain teenager Tanvir Mohammad Taqi in Narayanganj, in a case filed over his alleged remarks hurting religious sentiment.

The court of Narayanganj senior judicial magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order upon hearing at around 11:30 am.

Earlier, on May 5, the Detective branch (DB) of police submitted a probe report in the case.

Narayanganj court police inspector Sohel Alam told Banglanews that Rabbi appeared before the court on Thursday and pleaded bail.

Rabbi was earlier summoned by the court to appear before it on May 25, said the inspector.

On April 19, Narayanganj metropolitan unit Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh secretary general Maolana Ferdausur Rahman, as a plaintiff, filed the case accusing Rabbi.

It was said in the case statement that Rabbi hurt religious sentiment of the followers of Islam by commenting derogatory while addressing a program at the Shaheed Minar in Chashara of Narayanganj city on April 7.

According to the statement, Rafiur Rabbi said, “If the people of Bangladesh could know that the constitution of the country will have ‘Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim’ in its beginning and the country will turned into a communalist one, none of the 30 lakhs of martyrs would take part in the Liberation War.”

The Hefazat leader also alleged that Rabbi’s remark tarnished the image of the Liberation War and independence too.
