NARAYANGANJ: A Narayanganj court on Wednesday (May 24) has sent to jail Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, the head teacher of Piyar Sattar Latif High School at Narayanganj Bandar upazila, after he surrendered in court in a bribery case.

Narayanganj Additional Chief judicial Magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta passed the order denying Shyamal’s bail appeal filed by his lawyer. The court also fixed July 13 for the next hearing.

Earlier on Wednesday, the same court issued an arrest warrant against Shaymal Kanti in a case filed over taking bribe from another teacher.

Shaymal, with his lawyers, surrendered in court around 3:45pm.

Shyamal’s lawyer advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan told Banglanews that his client applied for bail due to physical illness but the court denied it.

Shyamal Kanti told Banglanews, “Police, in a bid to gratify an influential quarter, provided false reports against me. The school was closed on the date mentioned in the case and I was not present at school. I can’t accept bribe on the very day I was absent. I am a victim of grudges of some very powerful people.”

Narayanganj court police inspector Sohel Alam told Banglanews that the case against Shyamal kanti was filed for his alleged connection in demanding Tk 1.35 lakh bribe from an English teacher at the school, Morsheda Begum, in persuasion of enrolling her name as government’s monthly pay order (MPO) list.

On April 17, the investigation officer of the case and also Bandar police station in-charge (Investigation) Harun-ur-Rashid submitted the charge sheet in court accusing Shaymal Kanti.

Prosecutor's lawyer SM Siqqikur Rahman said, in the case (112/16), teacher Morsheda Begum claimed that Shaymal Kanti took bribe money from her in two terms but didn’t provide any assistance to enroll her name in MPO teacher list.

Earlier on July 14 last year, three people filed three separate cases against shyamal Kanti on charges of hurting religious feelings, beating up a student and taking bribe. The court dismissed the first two cases after holding hearing on that day and ordered Bandar police to submit report on bribery case.
