“Experts’ info on haor havoc lacks fact”

DHAKA: Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud said no water expert of the country gave genuine information about the disaster in haor areas.

He made the claim at an event presenting results of a research study on river erosion forecast in city’s Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) auditorium on Wednesday (May 24).

The minister said experts did not tell the truth behind the disaster and the media did not give accurate information. They only reported on the corruption of Bangladesh Water Development Board regarding construction of dams.

Blaming heavy rainfall for the haor disaster, Anisul Islam said the second heaviest rainfall recorded in India’s Cherrapunji area this year. The height of haor dams are six and a half meters but water flowed above seven meters. So the excessive rain is the main culprit behind crop damage and calamity.

State Minister for Water Resources Nazrul Islam, Water Resources Secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan and Water Development Board Director General Jahangir Kabir among others were also present at the event.
