KUSHTIA: An alleged robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with a team of detective branch (DB) of police in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia early Wednesday (March 29).

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam Rafique, son of one Aziz Sheikh, hailed from Machhpara village in Rajbari district.

Kushtia DB police officer-in-charge (OC) Sabbirul Islam told Banglanews that the team of police raided the area after being tipped-off about the preparation of a gang of dacoits for robbery near Kaligara Bridge on Kushtia-Meherpur road.

“Sensing the presence of the force, they opened firing, prompting the law enforcers to shot back for self-defense. At a stage, the robbers fled the scene, leaving an injured behind,” he added.

The law enforcers rescued bullet-hit Rafique and rushed him to Mirpur upazila health complex where on-duty physician declared him dead on arrival, Sabbirul added.

Police sent the body to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.

The DB OC further said three law enforcers also sustained injuries in the incident.

He also said they recovered one LG, one round of bullet, two machetes and other robbery equipment from the scene.

Rafique was an accused in several robbery cases filed with Kushtia and Rajbari police stations, he added.
