Sylhet ‘anti-militant’ raid enters day 4

SYLHET: The ongoing ‘anti-militant’ drive, “Operation Twilight” at the five-storey building ‘Atia Mahal’ in Shibbari area under Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet, entered day four on Monday (March 27).

The activities of the members of para-commando and SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) increased as they want to end the drive in quickest possible time, sources said.

Sounds of sporadic gunshots and blast of explosives were heard on day, reports Banglanews correspondent.

Sources further said the walls of Atia Mahal will be demolished on Monday and the army men are likely to enter the building in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the imposition of the section 144 is still in effect around three kms area of Atia Mahal. Sylhet-Fenchuganj road was closed till filing the report.

Six people, including at least two militants, have been killed in the drive so far.

In a press briefing on Sunday evening (March 26), joint forces said the operation is being conducted with extreme caution as the militants put Improvised Explosive Device (IED) throughout the building floors. “This is why it might take some time to complete the operation.”

On Friday (March 24) morning, Law enforcers cordoned off the building “Atia Mahal” as a suspected militant hideout. Later RAB, SWAT, Army and police jointly launched “Operation Twilight” in the evening.

On Saturday evening, twin blasts outside Atia Mahal killed six people including two police officials. At least 32 people, including police, RAB, and journalists, were injured so far.
