DHAKA: Death-row militant leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and his aide Sharif Shahidul Alam Bipul will seek presidential mercy. However, another aide Delwar Hossan Ripon will take decision later in this regard.

Prison’s superintendent of Kashimpur High Security Jail Mizanur Rahman on Wednesday said, “The Harkatul Jihad top leader and Bipul told us that they would seek presidential mercy when the verdict was read out to the death-row convicts in the morning.”

The copy of the Supreme Court’s verdict has reached the Kashimpur High Security Jail on Tuesday midnight.

Earlier on March 21, the SC released its full verdict that upheld its order confirming the death penalty for the 2004 grenade attack on the-then UK high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury.

Another death-row convict in the 2004 attack Delwar Hossan Ripon is being kept at the Sylhet Central Jail, where the authorities also read him out the verdict and asked whether he would seek the president’s mercy.

Ripon told the jail authorities that he will get final decision in this regard after discussing the matter with his lawyer.

Senior prison’s superintendent of Sylhet Central Jal Sagir Mia said that they read out the verdict to Ripon and they got this information from him.
