20 hostages killed, 13 rescued: ISPR

DHAKA: A total of 20 bodies of hostages were recovered and 13 including three foreigners rescued by a commando team of Bangladesh Army and Navy from the Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant in city’s Gulshan area on Saturday morning (July 2).

Besides, two police officials were killed and more than 20 were injured in the early phase of the drive.

Brig Gen Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, director military operations, made the disclosure while addressing the media at Dhaka Cantonment headquarters in the afternoon.

“The drive was code named as ‘Operation Thunderbolt’. It started at 7:40am. Six of the seven extremists were killed and one was held within the first 12-13 minutes of the operation,” he added.

The hostages were killed by sharp edged weapons at the early hours of the incident, Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury added.

He further said, one of the rescued was Japanese and two Sri Lankans.

“Details will be disclosed through proper authorities after completing the investigation,” he added.
