Tax official jailed for taking bribe

DHAKA: An additional assistant tax commissioner of National Board of Revenue (NBR) was sentenced to seven year’s imprisonment by a Dhaka court on Tuesday (July 04) for taking bribe from a businessman.

Judge of Special Judge Court-7 of Dhaka Munshi Rafiul Alam delivered the verdict in presence of the convict.

The convict tax official Kazi Ashiqur Rahman, additional assistant tax commissioner of NBR’s Tax Zone-5, was sent to the jail following the verdict.

Lawyer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Asaduzzaman Rana said that the tax official was jailed for two years under Section 161 of the penal code and five years under Section 5(2) of Anti-Corruption Law of 1947.

On September 20 in 2012, the ACC with the support of RAB caught red-handed the tax official Kazi Ashiqur Rahman while taking bribe from businessman Mizanur Rahman at the Segunbagicha office in the city. Later, the tax official was handed over to police.

Kazi Ashiqur Rahman was taking Tk 50,000 from the businessman.  He had demanded Tk 1 lakh to move tax return file of the businessmen, but later agreed on Tk 75,000.

Mizanur Rahman gave him Tk 25,000 in advance and he was giving the rest on that day.
