Local leader killed, 25 injured

RANGPUR: An upazila level leader of ruling Awami Leauge was killed and 25 others injured in a clash between two groups at Pirgachha in the district Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mafizul Islam, 45, AL general secretary of Pirgachha upazila unit.

The injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Of them, Ohij Uddin, 45, and Tofazzal, 52, are in critical condition.

Additional Police Super of the district Rezaul Karim said the supporters of Parul UP general secretary Dablu and former general secretary Tofazzal locked into a fierce clash at about 12:00pm over forming the UP AL committee, leaving Mafizul critically injured.

Later, he was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment at about 2:00pm.

Tension prevailed in the area after the clash. Over 100 members of law enforcing agencies were deployed in the area to avert further untoward situation.
