Vehicular movement halted for RCC

RANGPUR : Rangpur City Corporation Bastabayan Sangram Parisad has blocked highways and railways Saturday demanding immediate declaration of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC).

The road blockade started at 10:45 in the morning that cut communications with the rest of the country.

The road barricade programme was being continued till filing of this report at 1:15 pm, sources said.

Various kinds of vehicular movements were seen stranded on the both sides of the roads creating a long queue of 4 kilometers.

With City Corporation Bastabayan Sangram Parisad convener Sarafuddin Ahmed Jantu in the chair, the programme was also being attended, among others,  by Rangpur sadar upazila vice-chairman Masud Nabi Munna, Mohila Vice-chairman Nasima Zaman Babi, former student leader Mahmudul Hasan Khokan.

Moreover, people from all walks of life including politicians, lawyers, businessmen, social and cultural activists, human rights activists and journalists took part at the programme.

At the programme, Sarafuddin urged the prime minister to declare Rangpur as City Corporation immediately.

He also threatened to go for tougher programmes if the demand was not met within soon.

The Prime Minister had announced the decision for RCC at a huge public rally at Rangpur Zila School ground on 8 January 2011, he reminded.

Rangpur City Corporation is now a people`s demand, he further said.

In addition, Jatiya Party (Ershad) backed Rangpur City Corporation Andolan Parisad has called dawn-to-dusk hartal on Sunday to realize the demand.

Kotwali than Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain told banglanews: “A huge number of law enforcers were deployed on the highway to avoid any kind of untoward incident.”
