DHAKA: The World Conservation Congress-2012 will be held from 6 to 15 September 2012 in Jeju, Republic of Korea.
Leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and social organizations will discuss, debate and decide solutions for the world’s most pressing environment and development issues.
Sources said correspondents from more than 200 countries will take part. Meanwhile, around 160 workshops, 130 knowledge cafés and 50 conservations will be present in the congress.
Besides, at least 500 small and big programmes will also be organized in the eight-daylong congress.
The Congress theme is to be Nature+, a simple and memorable slogan that captures the fundamental importance of nature and its inherent link to every aspect of our lives.
Nature is naturally strong. Even the most delicate looking plant, animal or ecosystem is relatively tough, their survival instincts honed over generations of evolution. But many years of human civilization have undermined our environment and the fundamental natural infrastructure that supports our lives, communities and economies.
Nature+ is about boosting the resilience of nature – improving how quickly nature and people adapt to change. Better use of the inherent robustness of nature leads to healthier natural systems, better results from ecosystem and biodiversity restoration, and healthier people, communities and economies.
The Congress will explore many of our most pressing environmental and development challenges from this perspective and how strong and resilient nature is intricately linked to solving these issues. Nature+climate; nature+livelihoods; nature+energy; nature+economics: these are just some of the issues that the IUCN Congress will address. The stunning new logo represents nature and its beauty in a positive and enlightening way. The colourful symbol, evoking at the same time a flower and a bird, also incorporates traditional indigenous Korean patterns.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Bangladesh Correspondent Tuesday disclosed the information was in a press conference held at the IUCN country office in the afternoon.
IUCN Asia Region Director’s Special advisor Dr Jakir Hussain said, “The nature related congress is held every four years where governmental and private level participants from almost all the countries participate in the programme.”
He said, “All of us combine together in the congress mainly to create a beautiful environment dependent world and find solutions to environmental problems with the view of different countries.”
“The matters are also discussed with the donor countries and organizations,” he added.
Country Representative Istiaq Uddin Ahmed said, “Around 19 correspondents from government and private development organizations member of IUCN will take part in the congress from Bangladesh and they will be talking part in different seminars along with world environment leaders.”
On the other hand, IUCN governing council election will be held in the programme in which one of them from Bangladesh will be competing.
As for previous editions, the Congress will be divided into a Forum, open to the public, where IUCN Members and partners will be able to discuss cutting edge ideas, thinking and practices, and a Members Assembly, where the voting of the strategic policies of IUCN and the election of the Council, President and Commission Chairs will take place. During the Forum, numerous events will take place around the theme of the Congress “Nature +” in a multitude of formats (workshops, roundtable discussions, knowledge cafés, etc.).
The World Conservation Congress offers an unprecedented opportunity for achieving real influence in setting the international conservation agenda.
