Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated

DHAKA: Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, was celebrated across the country on Monday as the Shawal moon was sighted in sky of Bangladesh on Sunday.

President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Khaleda Zia greeted the countrymen and Muslims across the world on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

In separate messages, they wished peace, progress and prosperity for all. All preparations for holding the Eid congregations have already been completed all over the country.

In his message, the president said after a month-long fasting Eid-ul-Fitr brings messages of pure joy and pleasure for the mankind. “Eid builds ties of harmony, amity and unity among people of all classes and professions,” he said.

He hoped that the teachings of Eid-ul-Fitr would inspire all in building a good and prosperous society.

In another message, the premier said Eid teaches us about peace, sympathy and brotherhood. She called upon all for reflecting the teachings of Eid in all spheres of our personal, social and national life.

The premier hoped that Eid will bring the message of joy for all irrespective of their economic status.

The ruling Awami League President also prayed for continued development, progress and peace of Bangladesh as well as the Muslim Ummah.

The president and the Premier are set to exchange greetings with government officials, politicians, diplomats, civil society and people of all walks at their respective official residences in the city in the morning.  

In a separate message, opposition leader Khaleda Zia prayed for happiness, peace, development and progress of the Muslim Ummah, including Bangladesh.

The main Eid congregation in the capital was held at the National Eidgah at 8.30am amid unfavorable weather.

A total of 361 Eid congregations were held in 90 wards in the capital this year under the arrangement of Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

Law enforcing agencies, including the Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), are on guard to ensure security at Eid congregations.
