CHITTAGONG : A Chittagong Court on Sunday granted bail to 47 BNP leaders and activists in two separate cases filed against them for attacking police and vandalizing vehicles.
Chittagong Chief metropolitan magistrate Farida Yesmin passed the order after hearing their bail pleas.
On April 24, some 404 leaders and activists of opposition BNP were sued re on charge of attacking police, obstructing them in their duties, vandalizing vehicles during hartal.
Kotwali Thana SI Mohammad Ali filed the two cases under Speedy Trial Tribunal Act.
Kotwali Thana OC Rafiqul Islam told banglanews, “A case was filed against 4,00 people and another one against four people on the same charge.”
Three BNP men who were held during the hartal have been shown arrested in the two cases, the OC added.
On the day, some BNP activists vandalized a Tempo in port city’s Nasimon Bhavan area at about 12pm during a nationwide dawn to dusk hartal.
Police chased them that triggered a clash between them. Police charged baton on pro-hartal pickets, they, in retaliation, threw brickbats at police. Later, police fired one round of tear shell to disperse the picketers, police sources said.
The clash left 10 people injured including Kotwali Thana OC Rafiqul Islam, Constables Nazrul, Sohel and pro-hartal pickets, the sources added.
