BTRC to seek applications soon

DHAKA: Bangladesh Telecommunication Regularity Commission (BTRC) is going to seek applications this week for issuing VoIP license with a view to legalize the business in the country.

BTRC sources said the telecom regulator will issue the license under the "VoIP service Provider (VSP).

The application fee for VSP has been fixed TK 5,000, license fee TK 5 lakh and annual fee TK 1 lakh.

BTRC chairman Gen (retd) Zia Ahmed told banglanews the commission is working fast to publish advertisement in media seeking applications for VoIP license.

Meanwhile, the telecommunications ministry approved the VSP draft guideline last week after a long bureaucratic tangle. The ministry also asked BTRC to gear up the process of issuing VSP license.

Telecommunications Secretary Sunil Kanti said the draft guideline has been sent to BTRC. Bangladesh receives almost 60 million minutes international call a year. Of the calls, around 50 million minutes call come from legal and the rest from illegal transmission.

The Government is deprived of almost TK 800 crore each year as the government gets three percents from per international incoming call.
