The Sun Went Down While It Was Yet a Day

He wanted to die in the moonlit night. But he went in the dark of the night in the USA at 64. Before the last phase of his treatment in New York, he came to Dhaka to meet the people, his mother and to stay in his most preferred place, Nuhash Palli. It was his last home coming in his life.

He came again. But this time, he came forever never to leave the country and the people. He will not disappear from our memories and his works will live forever to move us with joys and sorrows, laughter and angst.

He was the first ever litterateur who gained such popularity and fame from his readers and the people at large in his life which he probably could not apprehend. After his ailment, he just could think of this affection. But he might not have imagined its greatness and prominence. He said this in an interview with ETV from New York about his realization of people’s love and affection for him on his last birth day.

Let alone Humayun Ahmed, we ourselves did not know that we love him so much indeed. The whole nation mourned his death and will be continuing to mourn for the days ahead. Before him, no one could claim these much people to visit the funeral after death at the Shaheed Minar. People across the country came to play wreaths and pay homage to a writer who was treated a dear one to them. They cried as if they have lost a person next to their souls. Neither the scorching sun nor the rain could thwart the people to gather the Shahid Minar.

The creator of various characters like Himu, Misir Ali, Shuvro Baker Bhai has gone without telling the fate of those characters. Thus, the destination of those characters is left undecided. However, it is the readers who will decide the placement of Humayun in the history of literature. Pertinently enough, Humayun worried a little about his position in the history of literature. He just loved to write for the people and readers. And the readers and the people duly cried for him placing their garlands on the coffin of this iconic litterateur.

All the areas of literature and entertainment were blessed by him. He has established a new dimension in the film, drama, novel, story and so on. The legendary writer put his sign on every sector he worked on.

He was symbol of unity of the nation as was proved at his death. He was unique to pen down the joys and the sorrows of the people so easily that the people cried and laughed and even took the street to protest the destiny of any character that viewers considered untoward as in case of Baker Bhai. He depicted lives as it is. But the ultimate truth about life is death. Humayun believed it solely and was not worried about it. Though, as desired by him, he did not die in a moonlit night, but the spell of rain showered him which he would enjoyed in his life. Though he died, he loved to live with us whom he loved to live in peace.

He could have given us more to shower our lives with laugh, joys and the insight of lives on earth.

The sun was on the middle of sky and went down while it was yet a day.
