DHAKA: State Minister for Forest and Environment Dr Hasan Mahmud Wednesday claimed that creation of ‘Green Climate Fund’ in the recently concluded Cancun climate conference was a great achievement for Bangladesh.
The Green Climate Fund would be spent in the development of Aila affected areas, building cyclone centers, coastal forestation, ensuring water navigation in rivers, increasing transportation efficiency and several other sectors, said Hasan Mahmud while addressing a press conference at his secretariat office in the city
Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that a 40-member committee comprising 15 members from the developed countries and 25 from the developing countries was formed at the conference to implement Green Climate Fund.
“Although it was not a 100 percent successful conference in terms of achievement, Bangladesh is the first country that has taken initiative to detect the threats of climate change,” he, however, added.
He said that emission of green house gas would be reduced under 2 degree Celsius as per the agreement titled ‘Inter-government Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’.
The minister said, “Bangladesh has played a pivotal role in negotiating the financial matter of the Cancun pact, adaptation, green climate change fund, trusty board and transition committee, adaptation framework, formation and implementation of adaptation committee plan”.
Environment and forest secretary Mihir Kanti Mojumder and other officials concerned were present at the press conference.
