DHAKA: All 26 sub-committees of State run Biman Bangladesh Airlines were abolished for allegedly misusing power.
The decision came from a meeting of Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at the Balaka building in the city on Friday.
Wishing anonymity, one Biman official said, “These sub-committees were formed in order to make Biman more dynamic. It was being expected that these committees will reduce both the mismanagement and loss in the airlines.”
“But, unfortunately they failed to establish good governance in Biman”, he added.
Sources said these committees were formed by the members of Biman’s board of directors. Each member used to get Tk 5,000 for attending one regular meeting. Every month they held some four to five meetings.
They have withdrawn hundreds and thousands of government money in last three years in name of holding meetings, said the source.
Earlier, the members of the committees got only Tk 1,000 for joining meetings. But, after 2009, they used to get five times more than before.
