Keep BNP-Jamaat quiet, India urges Ershad

DHAKA: India sought assistance of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad and leaders like him to ‘calm down’ the BNP-Jamaat alliance diplomatically.

The Daily Anandabazar, the Bengali daily of Kolkata, assessed the intention of the Indian government over the two-day visit of    Ershad to the county accordingly.

Quoting the Foreign Ministry of the country, the daily said the policy of India is clear as it is ready to work with any ruling-party of its neighbors.

The popular daily also claimed that Delhi is not interested to intervene about who would assume power in other countries.

It added: “But, the Manmohan government thinks that the relation of India with Bangladesh is moving forward after Sheikh Hasina assumes power.”

The report also said India has financed Bangladesh at low interest rates to assist various infrastructure projects.

It added: “Right now, the Indian government does not want any deflection in the relation. That’s why the meeting with Ershad is significant for India.”

The Indian government has called upon Ershad to keep the political situation steady till the next election, the report said.

Earlier on Sunday, Ershad went to India on a two-day visit.

He met with Indian foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai Monday.

He is also scheduled to meet with Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.

The former President of Bangladesh is likely to return home on August 19.
