At least four people died and several others wounded when a pedestrian bridge collapsed near Florida International University in Miami, Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Dave Downey said.

At least eight cars were crushed under the bridge and at least nine people were transported to hospitals for treatment, authorities said.

The 862-tonne, 174ft (53m) bridge fell over an eight-lane motorway on Thursday (March 15) afternoon, crushing at least eight vehicles, police said.

The bridge was erected on Saturday in just six hours.
