Fidel Castro’s son commits suicide

DHAKA: Castro Diaz-Balart, the eldest son of Cuba’s late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has committed suicide after months of treatment for depression. He was 68.

Cuban state media reports that Diaz-Balart committed suicide on Thursday (February 01). He had been battling depression for months and was being treated by doctors before his death.

At one point, Diaz-Balart's depression caused him to be hospitalized.

His father Fidel Castro, the notorious dictator of Cuba who defied the U.S. for decades and whose alliance with the Soviets nearly led to nuclear war, died in November in 2016 at the age of 90.

Diaz-Balart was born to Fidel Castro’s first wife Mirta Diaz-Balart, a woman from Cuba’s aristocracy who Fidel married in his youth before beginning the revolutionary struggle that later brought him and his brother Raul to power.

Diaz-Balart studied nuclear physics and was executive secretary of Cuba's Nuclear Energy Commission from 1980 until his dismissal in 1992.

He reportedly served as Scientific Advisor to the Council of State and Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba at the time of his death.
