DHAKA: At least eight people were killed and many injured in a fire and stampede in the town of Vila Nova da Rainha in northern Portugal on Saturday night, according to local officials.

The incident took place in a two-storied venue where some 60 people gathered around to watch or participate in an amateur card tournament.

The cause of the fire could not be known yet. Firefighters were called to the spot.
