DHAKA: Bangladesh and Myanmar has begun the much-awaited talks to find a way out in repatriating the Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to their home in Myanmar.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed between the both countries to launch the process of repatriation.

The two-day talks began in Myanmar capital Naypyidaw Wednesday (November 22). 

Senior officials of the two countries participated in the discussion where Bangladesh Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque leading his country’s delegation.

Officials from the Bangladesh’s foreign and home ministries, Bangladesh Ambassador in Yangon M Sufiur Rahman, and the top officials of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s office are attending the meeting.

Initially, the meeting is supposed to create a joint working group and related terms and conditions, in bid to ease the whole repatriation process.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, who led the Bangladesh delegation at the ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting, will sit in further discussion the repatriation process with Myanmar leaders on Wednesday and Thursday (November 23).

Official from Myanmar State Counsellor Aung Saa Suu Kyi’s office and from their foreign and home ministers are among the Myanmar delegation.

On Thursday, the AH Mahmood Ali will join the final meeting with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar's administrative capital.  

Myanmar military operations caused more than 620,000 Rohingya refugees to flee to neighboring Bangladesh since late August. World communities have been denouncing the campaign since its beginning in Myanmar’s Rakhine state which was termed as ‘textbook example’ of ‘ethnic cleansing’ by the United Nations.
