DHAKA: Bangladesh has ranked 88 among 119 countries in Global Hunger Index (GHI) marking two-level progress than of the preceding year, reports International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI).

The GHI is calculated by taking into account four key parameters: shares of undernourished population, wasted and stunted children aged under 5, and infant mortality rate of the same age group. A higher rank in the index implies worsening hunger condition.

However, Bangladesh is ahead of neighboring India and Pakistan. 

Earlier, in 2016, Bangladesh ranked 90th position among 118 countries.

However, India ranked 100 while Pakistan 106, Nepal 72, Sri Lanka, 84, and Afghanistan 107, stated the report.

Myanmar ranked 77 while China 29 and in the GHI 2017.

According to this year’s scores, the level of hunger in the world has decreased by 27% from the 2000 level.

Overall, global hunger levels are down by 29% this time compared to the 2000 level.

Besides, twenty countries, including Rwanda, Cambodia, and Myanmar, have reduced their GHI scores by over 50% each since 2000.
