Myanmar will not take back people without papers National Security Advisor (NSA) meeting

DHAKA: The Rohingya people, who have entered Bangladesh after fleeing from the violence in Rakhine State of Myanmar, will not be allowed back in without proof of citizenship, said the National Security Adviser (NSA) of Myanmar U Thaung Tun.

The decision was made in a National Security Advisor (NSA) meeting on Wednesday night (Sep 6), reports the Myanmar Times.

In a press conference after the meeting, advisor U Thaung Tun said, “Citizens must have proof of how many years they have lived in Myanmar. If it is found to be true, they can come back. But it will not be possible if they are not a Myanmar citizen.”

Although a security warning was issued in major cities like Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Mawlamyaing, people need not worry, he said.

However, he also claimed that there are many Muslims in Rakhine state who have not been victims of violence.

The government is taking necessary measures to protect the State and the people and strengthen the police in Rakhine State, he added.

According to United Nations aid workers, around 2.5 lakh Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh to avoid violence and the number is growing day by day. Many of whom are injured and bullet-hit and many others have died on the way.

On Tuesday (Sep 5), U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern and warned of the risk of ethnic cleansing and regional destabilization in Myanmar.
Giving warning of a “humanitarian catastrophe”, Guterres urged the U.N. Security Council, in a letter, to press for restraint.

Suu Kyi spoke by telephone on Tuesday with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who has pressed world leaders to do more to help. The First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan, has already arrived in Bangladesh to visit the Rohingya camps in Teknaf and Ukhia upazilas.

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a letter to UN, urged for immediate intervention to solve the crisis.
