DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday (December 7) upheld the death penalties awarded by a trial court to two accused in a case filed over killing a Dhaka Commerce College student in 2005.

An HC bench of Justices Bhabani Prasad Singh and Mostofa Zaman Islam announced the verdict upon hearing on the death references and appeals.

Three accused including erstwhile Motijheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam were sentenced to death while six others were handed over life term imprisonments by a trial court.

Of them, Rafiqul died while serving jail in December 2015.

The two other death-row convicts—Tarq alias Zia and Shakhawat Hossain Jewel, are absconding.

Assistant Attorney General Bashir Ahmed and Nirmal Kumar Das moved for the state while senior lawyers Yusuf Hossain Humayun, AKM Towhidur and Shafiqur Rahman moved for the convicts at the courtroom.

Kamrul Islam Momin, the college student, was shot dead in a place close to his home in North Ibrahimpur of Mirpur on September 13, 2005.

Momin also served as the secretary general for Dhaka Metropolitan unit of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Chhatra League.

As per the case statement, he was murdered following a dispute over the land boundary of their residence. As many as 26 people were accused in the murder case filed with Kafrul Police Station.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 announced the verdict in July 2011. Later, the convicts filed appeals to the High Court.
