ULAB launches new engineering program

DHAKA: The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on November 12 launched a new undergraduate program - Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) - under the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of the School of Science and Engineering.

The new four-year program, which recently received approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC), has as its department Head, Professor SM Mahbubur Rahman, and as its Dean, Professor HM Jahirul Haque.

Professor SM Mahbubur Rahman received BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, and PhD degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.

He was an NSERC Post Doctoral Fellow with the department of ECE, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Recently, one of his journal papers published in Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing has won the prestigious 2015 Sydney R Parker Best Paper Award.

Professor HM Jahirul Haque, the Dean of Faculty, obtained MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from the National University of Kharkiv, Ukraine.  He concurrently serves as ULAB’s pro-vice chancellor.

Rabiul Alam, Managing Director of EnergyPac Engineering Ltd. and Sonia Kabir, Managing Director of Microsoft Bangladesh Ltd, graced the inaugural ceremony as Guests of Honor and addressed more than 100 ULAB administrators, faculty, staff and students.

The launching video of EEE program has been released in the event. The Smart Tabs have also been distributed to the first batch of EEE students.

The ULAB Vice Chancellor (Acting) Professor Imran Rahman concluded the ceremony with vote of thanks.

The undergraduate program aims to produce competent professionals, who possess excellent knowledge and skills in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with adequate proficiency that enables them to compete successfully anywhere in the world.

Many universities at home and abroad were consulted to design the curriculum and course outlines; making the program the most updated in the country. Students will get an opportunity to enhance their analytical ability to solve complex problems and design new uses of engineering technology.  In this manner, they would be able to meet today’s rapidly growing demand both locally and internationally.

The program consists of essential electrical and electronic courses coupled with a solid foundation of Mathematics and Physics. Given ULAB’s unique education philosophy, students will also study a wide range of general and minor courses necessary to obtain a well-rounded education.

Since 2004, ULAB has been successfully running its Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) departments along with other departments such as Media Studies and Journalism, English and Humanities, and Business Studies.
