DHAKA: Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said that the country will start the importation of gold soon, to meet the demands of the precious metal in the local market.

“Gold wasn’t imported here ever. But it will be introduced now. Gold can be imported after getting licence from Bangladesh Bank. It (the proposal) will be placed at the cabinet meeting. It will come into effect after getting approval,” he said.

“Gold would enter the country through smuggling, till date. It won’t happen anymore. Gold bars will be imported here from now on,” added the minister.

Cabinet division additional secretary Mostafizur Rahman said that a policy is being formed regarding this. 

“The dealers could import gold bars after taking licence from Bangladesh Bank, once the policy is formed, he added.
