DHAKA: International Maritime Boundary Dispute Settlement Tribunal in Hamburg of Germany would pass verdict of an international arbitration on the Bangladesh-Myanmar maritime boundary dispute on March 14.
A press release sent from International Tribunal for Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany said this on Thursday.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni is scheduled to attend at ITLOS in Hamburg, Germany.
On December 14 in 2010, the case was filed with the ITLOS on the basis of a bilateral consent--against the backdrop of a near-confrontation between the two neighbors on the maritime front after Myanmar had sent a flotilla to explore petroleum inside Bangladesh’s extended territorial waters.
Bangladesh placed all necessary facts and figures before the tribunal on July 1, 2010 while Myanmar on December 1, 2010.
According to the ITLOS press meet, International Sea Law expert Thomas Mensha moved for Bangladesh while Professor Barnard H Oxman for Myanmar side at the arbitration.
On August 24, 2011, a Bangladeshi delegation led by Dipu Moni presented Bangladesh’s submissions before the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (UN-CLCS).
She said CLCS held its twenty-eighth session at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The foreign minister along with other members of the delegation made a presentation on Bangladesh’s claim that was lodged with the United Nations on February 25, 2011 for delineation of its outer continental shelf in the Bay of Bengal.
Bangladesh has claimed its continental shelf under the provisions of Article 76 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982.
“The presentation was aimed at enlightening the Commissioners of the critical legal and technical aspects of Bangladesh’s right to outer Continental Shelf,” said a MoFA official.
The area for which Bangladesh has submitted the data ranges from 390 to 460 Nautical Miles southwards from the coastline of Bangladesh.
The sea boundary dispute with India will be settled by 2014, Dipu Moni informed this earlier.
