BGMEA threatens to shut factories at Ashulia

DHAKA: The garment manufacturers Thursday threatened to shut their factories in Ashulia for an indefinite period from Sunday if the unrest continues in the sector.
The forewarning came from an emergency meeting of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held at its office in the city in the night.
After the meeting, president of the apex trade body that represents the export oriented woven, knit and sweater Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin made the assertion while talking to journalists.
He told the journalists that all the units at Ashulia would be shut down if the unrest is not resolved within Sunday.
Besides, the workers of readymade garments in Ashulia began demonstration for the fourth consecutive day Thursday demanding salary-hike.
The workers brought out demonstration procession and vandalized in different places on Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The agitating workers engaged in clash with the law enforcing members in phases. They also vandalized a vehicle of Maasranga Television.
Most of the factories in the area are declared closed.
Police, industrial police and RAB members are patrolling the area and announcing through mike towards the workers to be calm and avoid vandalism.
