DHAKA: Mother of Yasmin--a girl who was killed in police custody 17 years ago--Sharifa Begum is likely to get a job as the Deputy Commissioner of Dinajpur assured her Monday.

The DC of Dinajpur Jamal Uddin Ahmed gave his words to give her job following a report published on banglanews on Friday last in this regard.

The DC also assured her to bear all educational expenses of her 10-year old son Shahinur Rahman Sohan.

Sharifa Begum expressed her gratefulness to banglanews to this effect.

Besides, many well-wishers of Sharifa Begum contacted with banglanews after the report published and assured to help her.

Seventeen years ago, Yasmin, a 14-year-old girl of Golapbagh area in Dinajpur town, had been working as a domestic help in the capital.

On her way back home in the town, she got down at Dashmile intersection from a Panchagarh-bound bus in the early hours of August 24, 1995.

As Yasmin was waiting for a Dinajpur-bound bus, a police team on-patrol duty picked her up in their van on false pretext of giving her a lift to her mother’s house.

They later raped and killed her and dumped the body by the roadside.

Townspeople of Dinajpur staged demonstration demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits involved in the incident.

The district administration imposed a curfew in the town on August 27, 1995, facing the agitation by locals.

As thousands of people came to the streets violating the curfew, police opened fire on the protesters, killing seven people.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Rangpur sentenced three policemen to death who were executed in 2004.
