
LGED, UP sign deal for infrastructure initiatives

DHAKA: The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and 20 selected Union Parishads (UP) of Rajshahi and Naogaon districts signed agreements on May 13 and 14 to ensure participation of women UP members in decision making and development activities of rural infrastructure initiatives.
The agreement was signed under a technical assistance project financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) and administered by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Using a performance-based approach, the LGED will implement the activities under the project to institutionalize mechanisms to provide benefits to women from rural infrastructure projects.
The initiative is a sub-project of the ADB-supported Sustainable Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project (SRIIP), which is being implemented by the LGED.
Under the deal, the selected UPs will create opportunities and congenial work atmosphere for the women in general from their programmes and infrastructure activities.
The UPs achieving the “Performance Criteria” as outlined in the agreement will be eligible for availing a grant of US$ 21,700 for two years.
M Ali Akhtar Hossain, Project Director, Sustainable Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project (SRIIP), M Nazmul Alam, Project Analyst, ADB, M Saiful Islam, Deputy Project Director, Sustainable Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project (SRIIP), Rajshahi Zone, and ANM Badrul Amin, Consultant of the Project were present at the deal signing ceremony.
ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth and regional integration.
Established in 1966, it is owned by 67 members--48 from the region. In 2011, ADB approvals including co-financing totaled $21.7 billion.
