BD major Osmani freed in Syria

DHAKA: Bangladeshi UN observer Major Shahidur Rahman Osmani, who was held by a group of infuriated opposition people in Syria on Tuesday, has been freed Wednesday afternoon.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate disclosed the news to media on Wednesday evening.
According to the ISPR, a total of 18 Bangladeshi unarmed officers are working as United Nations military observer in Syria like any other UN mission.
Among them, a team of eight personnel including one Bangladeshi came across the opposition’s procession in Syria on May 15.
At some time in the day, some rowdy picketers took six unarmed military observers as hostages, and Bangladeshi Shahidur Rahman Osmani was one of them.
UN force commander in Syria took immediate necessary steps to make them free.
As a result, Major Osmani was freed around BD time 4:00pm and returned to his office.
He is now physically and mentally fit.
An ISPR source confirmed the matter to media.
Earlier on March 20 and April 5, a proposal was approved in US Security Council’s meeting to take the critical situation in Syria under control.
According to the decision, a total of 18 Bangladeshi observers went to Syria periodically in the end of April and in May.
