No latest data in Economist report: Razzak

DHAKA: Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr M Abdur Razzak said the Economist report published recently does not depict the latest data of the food security of Bangladesh.
The food minister came up with the claim while addressing a workshop on ‘National Food Policy’ held at the ministry’s conference room in the city Monday.
The report has been prepared by using the data of 2006, 2007 and 2008 while the country has developed in the sector enormously in last three years (2009-12), he claimed.
With Food Department Secretary Mushfeka Ikfater in the chair, representatives of USAID, FAO and concerning organization were present in the workshop.
On Aug 9, Dhaka, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released the Global Food Security Index 2012, where Bangladesh was ascribed as the least-food-secured country among the six South Asian countries.
The report was made on the basis of food affordability, availability and quality of some 105 countries around the world.
In the overall ranking, Bangladesh was placed 81st scoring only 34.6 on a scale of 100. Sri Lanka is the most food-secure South Asian country becoming the 62nd in the overall ranking with a score of 47.4.
