DHAKA: Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has said that the friends of Syria and the countries supporting peace and stability in the region should help pave the way for dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition.
Salehi made the remarks in a speech during the fourth meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), which was held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday, Tehran Times publishes the report Saturday.
He warned that the insecurity and instability in Syria could spread to the entire region, which would only serve the illegitimate interests of the countries pursuing the policy of divide and rule.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Salehi said that the presence of foreign forces in the region under the pretext of providing security only leads to the promotion of violence, terrorism, and extremism.
During his speech, he also emphasized all countries’ rights to use nuclear energy meant for peaceful purposes, saying that the possession of nuclear weapons and the doctrines that regard the use of nuclear weapons as justifiable pose the greatest threat to humanity.
In addition, Salehi called for the expansion of cooperation among CICA member states.
