Your quality of life improves when your stress levels drops. Chronic stress from sleep disorders, depression and ill health can interfere with an active life and lead to mental and physical problems. Not only does it take a toll on your mind, it also makes you look worn out and tired.
Says Yogesh Chavan, yoga expert, "Stress is a normal part of everyday life. But excessive stress can lead to mental and physical problems. You need to make sure that you are dealing with it with a positive attitude, and not let it hamper your life."
Here are ways you can sidestep these issues to stay healthy and youthful.
Men are from mars, women are from venus
It`s common knowledge that not only are men and women biologically different, even the way they think and emote differs. But did you know that when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety, both of them have diametrically opposite ways of handling their problems?
Says wellness expert Dr Anil Patil, "When men are stressed, they constantly look for a way to resolve their problems — both professionally and personally. But if they are unable to do so, they simply forget about their problems." It`s the `don`t fix it if it ain`t broken` approach.
On the other hand, women go through moments of crisis — anxiety, emotional breakdown and hypertension when they are stressed. Says Chavan, "When women are stressed, they tend to go into depression. Their emotions come to the forefront and they find it extremely difficult to look for solutions."
Beat those blues
To relieve yourself of stress, there are little things that you can practise in your day-to-day life. Says wellness expert Dr V L Shyam, "Do not let stress bog you down. There are some positive and healthy ways like practising yoga and meditation, taking a walk in the park or simply rejuvenating through sleep that can help you cope with stress."
Practice yoga and meditation
Often referred to as `moving meditation,` yoga focusses on your breath and calmness of the mind. It is said to be the key to help reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga also teaches your brain how to find calmness in the midst of chaos, releasing tension and reducing stress.
Meditation is said to bring peace of mind and contentment. It helps the mind connect with your body. Says Patil, "An hour of meditating helps simplify our lives. Through meditation, you can find great joy and also be relieved from your daily worries and tension.
Go for a long walk
When you`re debating whether to take your evening walk or skip it, remember, taking a long walk not only keeps your weight in check, it will help you to stay calm and at peace with your inner self. When you go out for a walk, you get enough time to think about solutions to your problems and introspect. This helps you cope better with your problems, thus resulting in lower stress levels.
Take some time out The next time you start palpitating because of a missed deadline or are upset because of a heated argument, instead of getting anxious and all worked-up, it`s best to take a short break. As soon as you feel your energy waning, take a five to 10 minute time out to breathe deeply. This will help you to soothe and engage your senses.
Tune in to some great music
There`s nothing like music to instantly lower your stress levels. A great mood-booster, music enlivens your spirit and helps you forget all your worries and anxiety. Listen to a song that you like the most. But make sure to listen to a happy one!
Look, listen and feel
We`re all busy living such a fast-paced life that we rarely stop to take a look around us. But remember, taking some time out to understand, see, hear and feel what is going on around you is a crucial touchstone for mindful living.
Focus on the present
As soon as you let yourself slip into the past, you`re cooking up a recipe for disaster. The same applies when you constantly think and fret about the future. Just let things be. Says Patil, "There is no point reminiscing about the past and worrying about the future. You cannot undo what has already been done and you cannot prevent something from happening. Concentrate on your present and try to make your life stress-free." It`s your best bet.
Make time for your family and friends
Spending quality time with your near and dear ones will help you cope with your daily issues. In case something is bothering you excessively, you can always share it with them. This not only gives you relief, you might also get some sound advice from your family and friends, which will help you tackle your problem.
Rejuvenate through sleep
Drift off into blissful sleep and wake up feeling refreshed. Sleep is the best way to relieve stress and tension. Make sure you get ample amount of sleep so that you stay fresh and start your day feeling positive.
