Cabinet endorses Arabia University Act

DHAKA: The government Monday approved in principle the draft of Islami Arabia University Act 2012 for bringing the country’s Kamil, Fazil Alia madrasas under its affiliation.

The approval came from the regular meeting of the cabinet held at secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The cabinet also approved the draft of the Vested Property Return (second amendment) Ordinance 2012 with a proposal for extending the time for submission of the application for such property.

At present, there are 1,415 madrasas in the country under the Islamic University, Kushtia.

After the meeting, Cabinet secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan made the disclosure in a press briefing.

The cabinet secretary said the persons concerned of madrasha education have been demanding for the university for several years.

Around 1,900 Alia Madrashas exist in the country, he added.

He also said the government has taken initiatives for constitution of the Islami Arabia University in fulfillment of the long demand of the persons and organizations related to madrasa education.

The premier at a meeting with leaders of the Jamiyatul Mudaresin, an organization of madrasa teachers, in April last assured of establishing an affiliated university to look after the higher Madrasa and Arabic education in the country, the newsmen were told.
