2,500 micro-credit donor agencies in BD: Muhith

DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith informed that there are over 2,500 micro-credit donor agencies in the country.

He made the disclosure while addressing a seminar organized by Micro-credit Regulatory Authority (MRA) in city’s CIRDAP auditorium Sunday.

“The quantity and area of micro-credit has been increased in the country. It was 4 percent in 1986 while it is near 30 percent now,” said Muhith.

In this circumstance, the minister said that the definition of micro-credit should be reconsidered.

He said: “Agricultural loan of banks is considered as micro-credit, which is not fair. I oppose with it.”

Mentioning the importance of resuming foreign exchange insurance, he said, “Foreign exchange insurance was introduced in 1982. But, it was closed later. The government should consider to resume it.”

With MRA executive vice chairman Khandakar Mazharul Haque in the chair, the seminar was also attended, among others, by Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman and PKSF chairman Dr Kazi Kholikuzzaman Ahmed.
